FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY "THE NOTHING THAT IS" (ALBUM REVIEW)
Metal outfit Fit For An Autopsy has finally unleashed their much anticipated seventh studio album THE NOTHING THAT IS via Nuclear Blast Records and produced by Fit For An Autopsy's own Will Putney at his Graphic Nature Audio studio in Kinnelon, New Jersey.
The band shares: “‘The Nothing That Is’ is a full realization of our identity and intention. Every song on this record serves a purpose, and it feels like our most dynamic and powerful album to date. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”
Fans can catch Fit For An Autopsy live on their North American headline run, The Nothing That Is – US Tour. Featuring special guests Bodysnatcher, Distant, Sylosis, and Judiciary, the tour kicks off earlier this month in Worcester, with stops to come in Houston, Mesa, Sacramento, Portland, Denver, Chicago, and more. Tickets for all upcoming shows are available now.
The album kicks off with an already fan-favorite track HOSTAGE that's dawned over a staggering 1 Million plays thus far on Spotify since its release back in July of this year. The drum fill to this song sets the tone for the entire record with a quick roll to a brutal breakdown that kicks off the song and the entire album. Following up is track SPOILS OF THE HORDE, which has a very black metal feel with a synth build-up in the beginning but I promise you will make you give the "metal stank face" the rest of the track. It's very "gallopy" giving off some Maiden meets Children of Bodem vibes.
Track 3's SAVIOR OF NONE/ASHES OF ALL is a bat-out hell from the jump. The best part of this track is the chorus's high singing part in the first part and last part of the track, it's such a departure from the band's norm and it was kind of a sick unexpected left turn that, if you pictured yourself running through a haunted forest while listening to the song, the singing part would be the beautiful rose garden oasis, and then the rest takes you back into a winding forest of unexpected left turns of blast beats and thorn bushes of screaming vocals and brutality. (I'm a very visual person.)
The track perfectly transitions into WEAKER WOLVES, which is kind of a slower track. It feels kind of (dare I say) "poppy". I can't describe it, but it gives off that vibe to me but I'm all for it. It's a track you're definitely stuck stank facing and bopping your head the entire time even during the stop break and breakdown parts. RED HORIZON is probably one of my favorite tracks from the entire THE NOTHING THAT IS album. It has an extra layer and progressive element to the guitar writing and the chorus is one that I can hear the entire crowd chanting live.
LURCH finds itself up there right next to RED HORIZON, I feel as though it's the "pallet cleanser" of the album, it has a real chill proggy rock vibe and sort of slower in tempo almost throughout, and it's pretty short compared to the rest of the tracks giving it a different feel from the rest of the rest of the record. The previous, and title track THE NOTHING THAT IS, is by far my favorite from the entire album. It sums up this record. It's a little bit of everything, it has its slow moments at the beginning, blast beats, breakdowns, intricate guitar work, and absolutely everything a great title track. ofa record needs. In my opinion, a title track to an album needs to sum up what the entire record is about and this track does just that.
LOWER PURPOSE is a total modern metal track. It feels like it has all of the bells and whistles of modern metal, has Born of Osiris meets Bodysnatcher vibes. I absolutely love the mid-song time signature change feel to the song, it's kind of a throw-off that still keeps your head bopping and finds you throwing you back to the beat of the music. LUST FOR THE SEVERED HEAD is my favorite track of guitar work on the entire album. The opening riff is absolutely disgusting and makes me never want to pick a guitar up again. The breakdowns are unparalleled and hearing things like this on the album makes me curious to see what the live material will be like. Last but not least is THE SILVER SUN, yet another "slower" track from the record that features some singing which can throw you off at times when you're so used to so much brutal screaming. Sometimes I forget how amazing the voices of these guys are when they sing, it's another favorite of mine from the record. Sometimes the deep cuts are the best!
