THE PINK SPIDERS “FREAKAZOID” Album Review
After months of anticipation, celebrated Nashville rock phenoms THE PINK SPIDERS have released their long-awaited, 5th studio album, "Freakazoid," with Pure Noise Records. Their most memorable album in years, "Freakazoid," features anthemic power-pop infused rock jams made for summer bliss, like "Devotion" and "Gold Confetti."
In celebration of the album's release, THE PINK SPIDERS have debuted a music video for their latest single "Freakin' Freakin' Out." Watch it here: https://youtu.be/GcIuFxH7S_A
The record's release also arrives just as the band has kicked off a week of shows with Less Than Jake, which will be followed by dates with The Iron Roses and a late summer run with Everclear.
In short The Pink Spiders FREAKAZOID is the perfect power-pop summer album, and in long, well I'll get to that in a moment. FREAKAZOID is punchy and poppy while also being serious and melodic. There isn't a moment where the album slows down and every track is another bouncy banger, no track feels like a filler and each song helps support the one before and after it.
The album kicks off with one of The Pink Spiders very first singles from the album GOLD CONFETTI. The track is the perfect upbeat tune to kick off the record followed by LET'S GO HOME, which is one of my favorite tracks from the record. The track is upbeat yet meloncholy, reminiscent of 80's new wave like Depche Mode.
One of their latest singles DEVOTION is up next on the record. And like the accompanying music video suggests, the track is like a 70's disco dance party for the soul whereas the following track CAN'T STOP LETTING YOU DOWN is what I would consider the "pallet cleanser" of the record, with the slow, melodic piano intro into an overall slower vibe of a song.
STONED TO THE BONE is a track that reminds me of the montage song during a 90s-early 2000s teen romcom, and this isn't a diss, I'm a sucker for those movies (I love you Van Wilder.) FREAKIN' FREAKIN' OUT, the band's latest single is smack dab in the middle of the record, which you can check out below, and sums up the record's intensity all in 3 minutes and 29 seconds.
YOU'RE THE ONE is by far my favorite track on the album and is the most pop-punk sounding with a fast, driving beat and sing-a-long-able chorus, although BABY ON HIGH, the following track is a close second with a very alternative rock sound, kicking off with hard, fast, distorted guitar, reminiscent of the mainstream pop-punk tracks being dropped in the early 2000's which have all of us with that wonderful, nostalgic feeling inside.
CUTTIN' LOOSE sounds like it was inspired by the best part of the synth power-pop tracks in the 80's. It's retro and upbeat while also still having a modern drive to it. Rounding out the album is THE RIGHT NOTE, which has all of the best elements of the aforementioned track CUTTIN LOOSE, with having a more driving rock feel to the track.
Overall, FREAKAZOID is, as I said the perfect summer power-pop record. Fans of The Pink Spiders are already going to love this track and if you're a fan of 80's synth pop, early 2000's pop-punk and 90's alternative rock then you're going to love this album as well!
